CETSIS 2014 city
Besançon is located on both sides of the Doubs, in the heart of the department of the same name. Regional capital, it is the first urban center with more than 130 000 inhabitants. Besançon, protected by numerous forts overlooking the city is historically situated in a very closed and cashed Doubs loop. The historic center of the city, ie "the loop" and the district-Beating is a very dense area occupied by residential character of buildings and public buildings. The city has overwhelmed this initial framework (an average altitude of 250 meters) to extend in a valley surrounded by seven hills topped with strong configuration that sometimes leads to comparisons with the site of the city of Rome is also dominated by seven hills.

By decision of the World Heritage Committee at its 32nd session in July 2008 in Quebec, the fortifications of Vauban are listed on the prestigious World Heritage List. This property becomes the 32nd French inscribed in UNESCO.
